Fine George III sterling silver cylindrical nutmeg grater, with removable top and pull-off base with internal steel grater, both top and sides engraved with bright cut and dot decoration. Hallmarked for Birmingham 1793, maker Samuel Pemberton.
In the late 18th century it became popular for gentlemen to carry nutmeg in a pocket-sized container equipped with a grater in order to add the freshly grated seed to punches or toddies. The nutmeg grater, or rasp, is usually cylindrical and combines a compartment for storing the seed and a grater or rasp, usually intricately crafted from fine material including silver or tortoiseshell.
