oil on plywood panel, signed lower left "Mildred Valley Thornton" inscribed on reverse "Chief John Stokan" "84 Chief John Stogan" and "84", two labels "Chief John Stokan Squamish Indian B.C." and Chief John Stogen (Semilahno) head of the Indians on the Musqueam Reserve died last spring. His proudest possession was a staff presented to his father by Queen Victoria in appreciation of a treaty signed with the government on behalf of his tribe.
